Whelp! It wasn’t intentional, but I spent the past two days trying to kick the tires on a new WordPress theme, and getting the website back up and running.
I logged in to my WordPress dashboard yesterday morning to write an update and got a warning that my version of PHP was going to no longer be supported soon, so I upgraded to the latest version… only to have a critical error with my theme take the site down.
It took me awhile just to figure out how to log back in to recovery mode so I could repair things.
Now, my WordPress Theme was adapted from one of the default themes back in 2007. I painstakingly figured out enough CSS code to adapt it to look and act the way I wanted it to. And every year or two something would act up with one of the latest WordPress updates.
But this time it was a blank white screen and no way to log back in. I never really did any major updates to the theme over the years, so I have no clue how to repair it. It was kind of old fashioned and didn’t translate to mobile devices that well anyway, so I decided to try to find something newer.
Anyway, I found a similar theme in the default ones, but it was adding a lot of extra things like shadow boxes around images that I didn’t like, and I couldn’t figure out how to change the settings.
So, in frustration I tried a couple other themes and settled on this one. It’s a little different than what I had before, and there are still a few quirks I’d like to iron out, but most of my content showed up the way I wanted.
I’m going to have to figure out if I can get the store running on this theme or if I need to find something else.
Technology!
